DFO Essendon is a factory outlet shopping centre in the Melbourne suburb of Essendon Fields, approximately 11 kilometres north of the Melbourne central business district. It is one of the eight DFO centres in Australia, owned by Vicinity Centres. DFO Essendon offers a wide range of discounted fashion, homewares, accessories, footwear, luggage and more from over 132 stores. DFO Essendon is located at 100 Bulla Road, Essendon Fields VIC 3041. It opened in October 2005 as part of the Direct Factory Outlet brand founded by Liberty Oil founders David Goldberger and David Wieland in 19973. The brand was sold to CFS Retail in September 2010 after facing financial difficulties. DFO Essendon is now part of Vicinity Centres, a leading Australian retail property group that owns and manages 63 shopping centres across the country. DFO Essendon was the site of a tragic plane crash on 21 February 2017, when a Beechcraft Super King Air charter flight carrying five people crashed into the centre shortly after take-off from Essendon Airport. The crash caused a large fire and extensive damage to the building.
