Westfield Sydney was built on land that was originally occupied by Imperial Arcade, Centrepoint Shopping Centre (later Westfield Centrepoint), Skygarden and Sydney Central Plaza. The oldest of these was Imperial Arcade, which opened in 1891 and was designed by Thomas Rowe, a prominent Sydney architect. It was closed and demolished in 1961 to make way for Centrepoint Shopping Centre, which opened in 1972 and featured a landmark tower that became a symbol of Sydney. In 1981, Skygarden opened as an extension of Centrepoint Shopping Centre, adding more retail space and a food court. In 1998, Sydney Central Plaza opened as another extension of Centrepoint Shopping Centre, featuring more shops and a flagship Myer department store. In 2006, Westfield Group acquired Centrepoint Shopping Centre, Skygarden and Sydney Central Plaza from AMP Capital Investors for $1.8 billion. Westfield Group then embarked on a major redevelopment project that involved demolishing Skygarden and Sydney Central Plaza, refurbishing Centrepoint Shopping Centre and building a new retail complex that connected to the existing tower. The project cost $1.2 billion and took four years to complete. The new shopping centre was named Westfield Sydney and opened in stages from October 2010 to April 20112. Westfield Sydney became one of the largest shopping centres in Australia and one of the most successful in terms of sales per square metre.
